LetsGetChecked

  • Lead Accessibility Specialist

    Jan 2024 - Nov 2024

Led a company-wide accessibility strategy at LetsGetChecked, driving compliance with WCAG 2.1 AA and fostering a culture of inclusive healthcare technology. Oversaw the creation of an accessible UI library, enabling scalable, compliant design systems across all teams.

A pivotal role in championing and leading accessibility initiatives throughout the organization. More than just compliance; it’s about leading a cultural shift towards accessible healthcare technology. In this role I was responsible for:

    • Creating a company wide strategy to comply with WCAG 2.1 AA.
    • Assessed current status for all company wide solutions with automated and manual tools.
    • Introduced success criteria for each team with the compliance strategy in mind.
    • Pushed for and supervised the creation of a company wide UI library that implemented accessibility best practices from the ground up. This saved hundreds of work hours on duplicated components.
    • Leveraged personal expertise in accessibility, healthcare, and front-end engineering influence teams to adopt accessibility as a mission.

The ability to leverage my experience in front-end development, design, healthcare and my own disabilities has put me in a unique position to lead such a meaningful initiative that really I’m proud of.

  • Senior UX Engineer

    Mar 2022 - Jan 2024

Joined LetsGetChecked’s iLab R&D team to design and prototype innovative healthcare solutions, from AI-assisted clinical tools to accessible data dashboards. Drove adoption of UI and accessibility best practices, while helping teams deliver high-impact features and improve cross-team collaboration.

Joined the iLab Research and Development team to:

Explore and conceptualize POCs such as:

    • Live glucose monitoring dashboard with drill down capabilities. For this POC I introduced accessible charts in presentations.
    • Dynamic patient banner that adapts to context, providing relevant context at a glance.
    • AI assistant that showed good practices in the healthcare context. It would show only available dosages, alert doctors for medication interactions and allergies, and require confirmation for final action.
    • Enterprise focused application designed to gamify good health habits with a competition for prizes and clout.
    • Conceived an end-to-end experience for at-home patient care that would keep patients and clinicians in the loop.
    • Inspire co-workers to adhere to Accessibility and UI best practices.
    • Helped other teams meet deadlines.
    • Helped establish a Culture Committee to drive engagement among colleagues.

Centro Hospitalar São João

  • Lead front-end developer

    Sep 2008 - Jan 2022

Led front-end development of jOne, the award-winning Electronic Patient Record system at Centro Hospitalar São João, unifying digital workflows across hospital services. Drove UX, architecture, and integration innovations that transformed patient care.

Design and development of an Electronic Patient Record (jOne) from the ground up at Centro Hospitalar São João. jOne brought a unified digital transformation to services such as:

    • Pediatric ER that relied on paper
    • Prescriptions that were previously handled by more than 5 applications and in some cases still on paper.
    • Integration platform built in-house to communicate with other systems via HL7. This platform introduced a centralized hub to distribute data while being compliant with local legislation.
    • Dynamic multi-step questionnaires with ability to derive results that allowed us to extend the product via configuration. This allowed non-technical users to contribute to the product. This was particularly impactful during the covid pandemic that raised the need for a quick adoption of national standards for treatment and data records.

My role in this project was to lead the front-end development by being responsible for:

    • Interviewing users, understanding their needs as well as business goals, and advocating solutions that brought tangible impact to the users.
    • Driving technical decisions such as choosing web technologies over Windows Desktop applications, using responsive UI that unlocked a breath of new devices to be used.
    • Creating consistent user friendly UI across multiple areas that enabled professionals to seamlessly transition between responsibilities and still be familiar with the entire system.
    • Creating initiatives that improved patient care with contextual information design, API and “hot path” optimization to enable near instant data visualizations.
    • Established good practices to improve developer productivity, composition principles, context aware components enabling our small team of 4 to build a world class solution.

In Feb 2014 jOne was the winner of the MSHUG 2014 Innovation Award for it’s groundbreaking patient condition prediction engine that predicts when a patient will be getting worse and needs medical attention reducing treatment costs and improving patient care.
